Community Alcohol & Drug Service – CADS (Youth) provides free treatment for those with alcohol and/or other drug (AOD) problems as well as family and friends concerned about another’s AOD use.

Allied Health

Allied Health teams at Auckland City Hospital provide a range of services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, speech-language therapy, and nutrition & dietetics.

Anaesthesia
  • Adult Anaesthesia services facilitate pain-free surgery and ensure the safety of the patient before, during and after surgery. 
  • Children – The Paediatric Anaesthetic department is located on Level Two of Starship and provides an internationally recognised, modern anaesthesia service. 
Assertive Community Outreach – ACOS (Mental Health)

Assertive Community Outreach Service (ACOS) is a clinical team within our community mental health service. It provides assertive treatment and support to service users with psychotic and mood disorders who have a pattern of problematic engagement with services and/or treatment recommendations and a history of high risk during periods of relapse.

Asthma
  • Adults – Respiratory medicine is the branch of medicine that treats people with diseases affecting the lungs and breathing, including asthma.
  • Children – Respiratory paediatricians have specialised knowledge and skills in the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of children’s chest and lung problems, including asthma.
Audiology/ Hearing

Audiology provides full audiology services to the paediatric population of Auckland and Waitematā including diagnosing hearing loss, fitting of hearing aids and auditory processing assessments.

Burns

The Auckland Regional Burn Service/ National Burn Service is located at Middlemore Hospital and provides treatment and rehabilitation for patients with burn injuries.

Birthcare aim to make your birth experience the best it can be by offering a supportive space to birth and care for your baby, and antenatal and postnatal education classes.

  • Adult – Te Pūriri o Te Ora is our regional cancer and blood service, providing cancer care to people in Auckland and Northland, as well as specialist national services.
  • Children – Starship's Blood & Cancer Centre provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment and long-term follow-up for children and adolescents with cancer and non-malignant haematological conditions.
BreastScreen Aotearoa

BreastScreen Aotearoa is New Zealand’s free national breast screening programme for women aged between 45 and 69.

Buchanan Rehabilitation Centre

Buchanan Rehabilitation Centre is a specialist 40-bed mental health, recovery-focused, rehabilitation service providing assessment, treatment and intensive rehabilitation combined with a high level of clinical support in a safe environment.

National Bowel Screening Programme

The National Bowel Screening Programme is free for people aged 60 to 74 years. It aims to save lives by finding bowel cancer at an early stage when it can often be successfully treated.

Te Pūriri o Te Ora is our regional cancer and blood service, providing cancer care to people in Auckland and Northland, as well as specialist national services.

  • Adult – Clinical Haematology specialists provide care in haematology, medical oncology and radiation oncology.
  • Adult – Gastrointestinal Cancer Service specialises in the assessment and management of familial gastrointestinal cancer. 
  • Adult – Haemophilia Centre provides comprehensive care for people with haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders/diseases. 
  • Adult – Oncology Services are specialists in providing treatment of cancer.
  • Adult – Radiation Therapy specialises in localised treatment of cancerous and some non-cancerous tumours with radiation.
  • Children – Starship's Blood & Cancer Centre provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment and long-term follow-up for children and adolescents with cancer and non-malignant haematological conditions.
Cardiology

The Cardiology team at Auckland City Hospital has an international reputation for cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery.

Cardiac/ Heart Conditions (Children's Health)

Paediatric and Congenital Cardiac Service (PCCS) is the sole provider of cardiology and cardiac surgical services for infants and children with congenital and acquired heart disease in New Zealand and parts of the Pacific Basin. We provide cardiac care across the life spectrum with a fetal cardiology service through to care of those born with congenital heart disease who are now adults (ACHD). 

Cardiac Inherited Diseases (Children's Health)

Cardiac Inherited Diseases Service (CIDG) is a national network of specialist clinicians and scientists working to prevent sudden death due to inherited heart diseases.

Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit

The Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) and Cardiothoracic and Vascular High Dependency Unit (CVHDU) provide intensive care and high dependency care for adults and rangitahi over 15 years old with all conditions related to heart, lung and blood vessel surgery. 

Auckland City Hospital CVICU is the national referral centre for adult patients requiring extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).

Child & Family Unit

The Child and Family Unit (CFU) is an acute psychiatric child and adolescent mental health inpatient unit located on level one of Starship Children's Hospital.

Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM)

The Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) is one of the leading critical care units in New Zealand, located on the 8th floor of Auckland City Hospital. We provide intensive and high-dependency care for patients over the age of 15 for all conditions except heart, lung and blood vessel surgery. Our specialist areas of intensive care include liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation and neurological conditions.

Day Stay Unit (Children's Health)

The Day Stay Unit at Starship is a small, busy unit providing comprehensive medical and surgical care on a short term basis.

Dental – Auckland Regional Dental Service

Auckland Regional Dental Service (ARDS) is a children's community dental clinic (free for children aged 0-17 years).

Dermatology/ Skin

Once you are referred to the Dermatology Outpatient Department by your GP, you will be seen by a member of the dermatology team who will ask questions about your illness and examine your skin to try to determine or confirm the diagnosis.

Our Dermatology team help with conditions affecting the skin, hair and nails.

Starship Children's Health runs general paediatric dermatology clinics for children referred by their GP.

Developmental Paediatrics

The Developmental Paediatric service at Starship offers assessment and management of children with significant developmental concerns, including the ongoing management of children with a disability. 

Diabetes Centre

Our Diabetes Centre is located at Greenlane Clinical Centre. Diabetes is a group of conditions which cause high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. 

Diabetes & Endocrinology (Children's Health)

Starship Paediatric Diabetes and Endocrine Service is a regional service providing care for children with diabetes and endocrine disorders throughout the greater Auckland area.

Dual Disability Regional Mental Health

The Regional Dual Disability Mental Health Service provides support for people with intellectual disability who also have significant mental health concerns.

Mobile ear clinics provide ear services to children.

Ears, Nose and Throat (Adult Health)

Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery (ENT) is also known as Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.  This area of medicine is concerned with disorders of the ear, nose, throat, the head and the neck.

The Starship Children’s Emergency Department specialise in meeting the needs of acutely ill or injured children and young people.

Endocrinology specialises in evaluating and treating suspected endocrine gland and metabolic bone disorders. 

Equipment Returns (Allied Health)

The Equipment Returns page provides information relating to equipment given to patients by their Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist to help with mobility and function at home, for example, wheelchairs, walking aides, and bathroom equipment.

Eye Health/ Opthalmology

Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that is concerned with the health of eyes and their surrounding tissues including muscles, bones, eyelids, and tear production/drainage systems.

Family Options Respite Programme

Family Options NASC is a regional Needs Assessment & Service Coordination (NASC) service that is responsible for the co-ordination of supports for children with short term health related needs or children with long term, chronic health conditions.

Fertility PLUS provide a comprehensive range of fertility investigations and treatments, and have helped thousands of couples fulfil their hopes of starting a family.

Fetal Medicine Network

Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) is a branch of Women’s Health which includes high-risk pregnancy where the mother or baby or both has a problem. 

Forensic Psychiatry

Mason Clinic Regional Forensic Psychiatry Services is for people who have a mental illness and/or intellectual disability within the context of criminal offending.

Gastric Conditions (Adult Health)

The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Auckland City Hospital and Greenlane Clinical Centre provides services to the Auckland District Health Board (DHB) catchment area via GP referral and tertiary services via specialist referral from other DHBs.

Gastric Conditions (Children's Health)

Starship's Gastroenterology/ Hepatology service provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment and long term follow-up for children and adolescents with a wide range of gastrointestinal and liver conditions. 

Gastroenterology and Hepatology

The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Auckland City Hospital and Greenlane Clinical Centre provides services to the Auckland District Health Board (DHB) catchment area via GP referral and tertiary services via specialist referral from other DHBs.

Gastrointestinal Cancer Service

The Gastrointestinal Cancer Service comprises a multidisciplinary team that specialises in the assessment and management of familial gastrointestinal cancer.

General Medicine

General Medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of diseases affecting the internal organs of the body in adults.

General Surgery

In broad terms general surgery can be said to deal with a wide range of conditions within the abdomen, breast, neck, skin and, in many hospitals, vascular (blood vessel) system.

Genetic Health Service

Genetic Health Service NZ are a national service who provide expert genetic diagnostics and genetic counselling services, providing assistance, advice and education in managing genetic conditions.

Gynaecology

The general gynaecology service provides care to women living in the Auckland DHB catchment of Central Auckland.

Haematology

Haematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the blood and blood-forming organs. 

Haemophilia Centre

The Haemophilia Centre provides comprehensive care for haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders/diseases. 

I

Immunology

Immunology is the tertiary referral centre for diagnosis and treatment of allergy and other immune disease (immune deficiency and some autoimmunity).

Infection Prevention (Children's Health)

The Infection Prevention team consists of a small team of Infection Control Nurse Specialists who cover all areas of the Auckland District Health Board.

Infectious Disease

The infectious diseases service at Auckland City Hospital contributes to the care of people with a wide variety of infections both within the hospital and in the Auckland/Northland community.

The Infectious Diseases Service provides care for children with complex, severe or chronic infectious diseases such as bacterial meningitis, tuberculosis, HIV, newborn infections and rheumatic fever.

K

Kari Centre (Community)

The Kari Centre is a secondary mental health service that provides support for moderate to severe mental health conditions that cause a significant impact on a child/young person’s (rangatahi) functioning.

Kidneys

Nephrology is a branch of medicine which looks at the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of diseases affecting the kidneys, ureters & bladder. 

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs about 12 centimetres long. They sit just at the edge of your ribs at the back. They clean out waste and excess fluid from your blood.

  • Adult Health – Renal medicine includes the urgent care of acutely ill patients as well as those with chronic illnesses who require long-term care.
  • Child Health – Starship Paediatric Nephrology provides a full range of diagnostic and treatment options for both acute and chronic conditions affecting the kidney.

Labour and Birthing Suite

Our Labour and Birthing Suite at Auckland City Hospital is one of the largest maternity units in New Zealand. We also provide care to women who need greater levels of specialist care.

LabPLUS is the tertiary referral medical laboratory of Auckland City Hospital, New Zealand.

Liver Transplant Unit

The NZ Liver Transplant Unit provides a range of liver services.

Lotofale Pacific Mental Health

Lotofale Pacific Mental Health Service aims to optimise the mental health and general wellbeing of adult Pacific Islanders in central Auckland who have serious mental health problems.

Respiratory medicine is the branch of medicine that treats people with diseases affecting the lungs and breathing.

  • Mason Clinic Regional Forensic Psychiatry Services is for people who have a mental illness and/or intellectual disability within the context of criminal offending.
  • Te Whetu Tawera is an acute mental health unit for Adults. It has 58 beds, which includes 12 Intensive Care Unit beds.

Nephrology

Nephrology is a branch of medicine which looks at the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of diseases affecting the kidneys, ureters & bladder.

Neurology

Neurology is the study of the nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves), how it controls various parts of the body and the diseases and disorders that may affect it.

  • Adult health – Neurology. Your GP will refer you to see a neurologist if they think you have a problem that involves the nervous system and that needs specialist help in diagnosing or treating that condition.
  • Children's health – Paediatric neurology. The service and our inpatient care are based at Starship Children’s Hospital. There are outpatient clinics in Starship Hospital and at regional centres including Whangarei, Wilson Home (Waitemata), Manukau SuperClinic (Counties Manukau), Tauranga, Hamilton, Rotorua, Hastings (Hawkes Bay), Gisborne and New Plymouth (Taranaki).
Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery is the surgical specialty that deals with diseases or disorders of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. The Departments currently cover an extensive area of the North Island from Northland, all of Auckland, Coromandel to Taranaki, Waikato, Lakeland and Tairawhiti.

  • Adult health – The Neurosurgical Department at Auckland City Hospital treats patients over 15 years old with diseases or trauma involving the central and peripheral nervous system. 
  • Children's health – The Neurosurgical Department at Starship Children's Health treats children aged 0-15 years with diseases or trauma involving the central and peripheral nervous system.

 

Newborn Services

Starship Newborn Services is a multidisciplinary team specialising in caring for newborn babies with medical, surgical and complex health needs.

Northern Health School

The Northern Health School is one of three schools set up by the Ministry of Education to provide educational support for children with high health needs.

Organ Donation

The primary responsibility of Organ Donation New Zealand (ODNZ) is to coordinate the donation of organs and tissues from deceased New Zealand donors for transplant in New Zealand and sometimes Australia.

The Adult Community Occupational Therapy Service provides rehabilitation utilising the Person, Environment and Occupation model of care, to optimise clients’ health and well-being in the community.

Older People's Health

Older People's Health looks after the over 65-year-old population of Central Auckland and offers assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services.

Oncology

The Oncology service is part of the Regional Cancer and Blood Service at Auckland District Health Board. Our teams are specialists in providing care in haematology, medical oncology and radiation oncology.

Pacific Health

The aim of the Pacific Health service is to contribute to the health improvement of Pacific Peoples by improving access for Pacific people to hospital care.

Paediatric Cardiology

The Paediatric and Congenital Cardiac Service (PCCS) are the sole provider of cardiology and cardiac surgical services for infants and children with congenital and acquired heart disease in New Zealand and parts of the Pacific Basin.

Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Starship is a national service for children requiring intensive care for longer than 24 hours and a regional service for all children requiring intensive care or high dependency care.

Pain – Acute

Our Acute Pain Clinic provides support for patients who have been under the recent care of the Auckland Regional Pain Service.

Pain (Regional)

The Auckland Regional Pain Service (TARPS) provides quality pain management to the people of Auckland and beyond. TARPS provides outpatient services including clinical assessment and management of acute and chronic pain utilising a multidisciplinary approach.

Palliative Care (Children's Health)

The Paediatric Palliative Care Team is based at Starship Children's Hospital.

National Perinatal Pathology Service

The National Perinatal Pathology Service provides non-coronial post-mortems, including internal, external and placenta examination.

Physiotherapy

The Allied Health Community Physiotherapy Team is an adult rehabilitation service for people with long term health conditions and / or disability support needs.

Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery covers a wide range of different surgical procedures that repair, reconstruct or replace structures in many different parts of the body including the skin, face and head, hands, breast and stomach.

Pohutukawa Clinic Adult Auckland Sexual Assault Assessment and Treatment Services

The Pohutukawa Clinic is a specialist medical service for anyone age 18 or over who has been sexually assaulted or abused.  

Pregnancy

National Women's Health provides comprehensive maternity care for women and babies during pregnancy and after birth.

Primary Options for Acute Care

The POAC service provides healthcare professionals access to a range of coordinated services to prevent unplanned and avoidable acute hospital attendances.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a free 8 week group programme for patients with chronic lung diseases (such as COPD) who have developed physical and emotional symptoms which affect their everyday lives and limit their function.

Paediatric radiology is a branch of radiology that deals with the imaging of children. Imaging is often part of a diagnostic work-up; finding out the disease or condition that is making a child ill.

Refugee health (for health professionals)

When refugees arrive in New Zealand they are accommodated at the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre (MRRC) for an orientation to prepare them for life in a new country.

Sexual Health

Community Health Social Workers provide assistance to individuals and families with health-related personal, emotional and social issues.

Speech Language Therapy

The Community Speech-Language Therapy (SLT) team provides assessment, treatment and management for adults with communication and/or swallowing problems in order to help them reach and maintain their potential.

The Starship Hospital Spine Clinic is nationally recognised for its patient care, education and research capabilities in the field of scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, trauma and other spine conditions.

Tū Māia

Tū Māia is a regional service which provides mental health assessments for young people with a known or suspected mental health disorder who are engaged in offending behaviours and involved with the Justice System.

Urology

Adult – The Urology Service admits patients for a wide range of interventional and diagnostic procedures from large bladder reconstructive surgery to small day cases.

Children – The Department of Paediatric Surgery and Urology provides surgical management for children living within the greater Auckland and Northland regions, as well as children with complex paediatric surgical conditions New Zealand-wide and for the Pacific Basin.

Auckland Regional Vascular Service

The Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care and High Dependency Units (CVICU and CVHDU) provide intensive care and high dependency care for adult patients >15 year with all conditions related to heart, lung and blood vessel surgery.

Vascular surgery is a specialty of surgery that involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the vessels (arteries and veins) of the vascular system.

Alcohol & Drug Community Service - CADS (Youth) provides free treatment for those with alcohol and/or other drug (AOD) problems as well as family and friends concerned about another’s AOD use.
