Categories and Criteria

Applications for the 2017 Health Excellence Awards are now closed. Applications for the 2018 Awards will open in July 2018.

The categories for the Health Excellence Awards 2017 are as follows.

Please note that there are different criteria and application forms for each category. The category criteria and relevant application form can be found within each of the below drop-downs.

You can learn more about some of the winning and finalist submissions from prior years in the 2015 and 2016 winners galleries.

Please note that applications are open only to those who provide services or deliver care by or on behalf of Auckland DHB.

Excellence in clinical care

This category is for teams or individuals in a clinical discipline, who have improved clinical care, patient safety or health outcomes for the Auckland DHB population. These improvements can be large system improvements or localised improvements. Applications for this award will be judged on both the outcome and the process.

Criteria

Identifying the problem

  • Show evidence of the problem and how it was identified.
  • Detail why this was an important area to address.
  • Briefly state the desired goal or outcome you hoped to achieve.

Approach and process

  • Provide details how the proposed changes were implemented. Include the steps taken and the approach used.
  • Include any creative ideas and new thinking that were used to reach the desired outcome.

Stakeholder engagement

  • Explain the approach taken to involve and communicate with patients, employees and other stakeholders in the design and delivery of your achievement.

Measuring the improvement

  • How did you measure your results against the goals and outcomes you set at the outset.

The benefits of the improvement

  • Describe the effects of the changes you made during the project.
  • Describe the benefits to patients, employees, Auckland DHB or the healthcare system.

Lessons learned

  • Any lessons you learned along the way or things you would do differently next time.
  • How the improvements will be sustained.
  • Any potential to inform best practice and roll out in other places.

Excellence in community health and wellbeing

This category is for healthcare organisations, teams or individuals who have demonstrated innovative thinking and creative solutions that have improved the health outcomes and wellbeing of the Auckland community. This could include: targeting hard to reach populations, overcoming social and culture barriers and adopting unique solutions to healthcare issues.

Criteria

This category is aimed at clinical and non-clinical teams and individuals who have identified sustainable quality improvements that demonstrate measurable outcomes and efficient ways of working in healthcare. These improvements can be large system improvements or localised process improvements. Applications for this award will be judged on both the outcome and the process.

Excellence in the workplace

This category is for organisations, healthcare teams or individuals which have improved the skills and wellbeing of employees and improved the workplace or overall job satisfaction. This could be through implementing professional development and workplace training, recruitment, encouraging workplace diversity, making us a more sustainable work place or making Auckland DHB a better place to work.

Excellence in research

This category is for individuals and teams who have published original cutting-edge research in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. Applications should include a copy of the published research paper. The paper must have been published after July 2016.

Criteria

Your application should include a 150 word summary (summary to be written on Judgify when uploading your application). This summary will be used in promotion about your piece of work so please make sure you put your key results in the summary.  You should also attach a copy of your published research.  Below are the features judges will look for when making their assessment.

  • Originality or innovation of approach.
  • Relevance to populations.
  • Rationale and hypotheses well made.
  • Scientific merit of study design.
  • Data analysis justified and robust.
  • Impact of publication on the field (evidenced by citations, editorials or other publicity).
  • Contribute to improving knowledge of health or practice of healthcare.
  • Potential to inform best practice and guide decision making.

Living our values team award

This Award is for anyone to nominate an Auckland DHB team or a team that works on our behalf for our patients and population who truly lives and breathes our values – Welcome Haere Mai | Respect Manaaki | Together Tūhono | Aim High Angamua.

Please nominate a team you work with that consistently demonstrates our four values in action. Include a specific example of how they demonstrate our values. 

This Award will be shortlisted by a judging panel and the final decision will be decided by a vote from our Auckland DHB people.

Criteria

Providing specific examples describe how the team or individual lives our values:

  • Describe how they are welcoming and put people at ease.
  • Describe how they show respect by nurturing and caring for others.
  • Describe how they work together with patients, families and colleagues to achieve.
  • Describe how they aim high and aspire to excellence.

Chief Executive Award

This award will be selected from all applications in the above categories. No separate application is required for this Award.

The Chief Executive Award will be presented to the project, person or team who shows the most commitment to a true and equal partnership between patients, families and communities by involving them in the design and delivery of improvements
