We are committed to high quality, ethical research in emergency medicine/trauma. We aim to promote a culture of better patient care through research and evidence based practice in the emergency department (ED) and are part of the New Zealand Emergency Medicine Network for research.
The research process
All research projects involving ED patients, staff or physical resources need to be approved by the Emergency Medicine Research group, chaired by Dr Peter Jones. If you are interested in doing a research project in the adult ED, please send your protocol, ethics approval and plan for funding via email. It is most helpful if you outline in the email what you would like adult ED to do with respect to your project. We meet monthly to discuss proposals and will endeavour to reply as soon as possible. We also recommend you look at the Auckland DHB Research Development Office website to understand the Auckland DHB research approval process.
We have recently won a major HRC grant to study the Effect of the Shorter Stays in Emergency Departments time target on clinical markers of quality of care. This is nationwide research and the grant is worth $1.1 million over five years (October 1010–September 2015). With this grant we employed a full-time data manager and two research fellows to join our research team. We are working closely with a team of academics at the School of Population Health at the University of Auckland on this project, which is one of the first emergency department research projects to receive HRC funding in NZ and one of the largest ever received by Auckland DHB. (external link) We are also actively recruiting patients in an international multicentre randomised controlled trial for the management of spontaneous pneumothorax, helping neurology to identify patients with status epilepticus for an observational study and working with the University of Auckland to identify people with concussion for a prognostic study using MRI.
